“Grant is a wonderful person! He went to school for a while in Florida. He lives in Glasgow, but delivered the van to us at the airport in Aberdeen, which is a city quite far from him. He then drove with us to Ballateer where our hotel was located. It was about one hour from the airport. He let us follow him because we were visiting Scotland for the first time and it was dark. It would have been extremely difficult for us to find the hotel without him. He was fantastic! The van was small, but it worked for us. You cannot put a lot of luggage in it. There are two seats in the front and a space in the back for the wheelchair. The ramp was a manual ramp. Grant let us put some luggage in his car. He also met us at the hotel when we were leaving to make sure we got to the airport OK and could transport our luggage.” Barbara, 11/16/2009

“I made arrangements with Dave via email. I think we spoke once. I gave him my daughter’s height, weight, and other dimensions of her chair. He did everything else. He adjusted the chair to fit her. Dave and Grant contacted each other and the two of them made arrangements to meet up with us at the airport. They coordinated everything so that the chair and van would be there at the same time. Dave also adjusted the wheelchair again at the airport so that it would exactly fit my daughter. He is a very nice man! He also met us at the airport when we were leaving to pick up the chair. I am not sure what city Dave lives in, but he delivered the chair to us with no problem. Grant and Dave were the best experiences we have ever had with renting equipment for our daughter.” Barbara, 11/16/2009

PRECAUTIONS

“The UK has a national system of toilets for the disabled. The National Key Scheme, sometimes known as the RADAR Scheme, was developed because some public toilets designed for disabled people had to be locked to prevent damage and misuse. This has been countered by their being locked separately from other toilets. The NKS aims to provide disabled key holders with independent access to the toilets provided for them and increase the likelihood of the facilities being in a useable state. You can send for a disabled key and you can use it to get into the toilets. They sent us the key and a book with the location of all the toilets in the UK. Even though I sent for the key, we never had to use it. There were toilets for use to use and we did not need to use it. That might not be the case everywhere. We were in smaller cities.” Barbara, 11/16/2009″Wheelchair Accessible” seems to be an American term. Sometimes people in other countries understand it if they have dealt with Americans before. Sometimes you have to explain what you mean. Tell them you need a van with a ramp that the wheelchair can drive into and the person can sit in the wheelchair.” Barbara, 11/16/2009

“To “Rent” also seems to be an American term. In the UK, the term is “hire.” Barbara, 11/16/2009

“Make sure you find out if the vehicle is a standard or automatic. When I asked about the van, I mentioned a “stick shift.” This is also an American term.” Barbara, 11/16/2009
