OVERVIEW

Kona, Hawaii, is also known as “The Big Island of Hawaii.” It is the largest island in the chain of the Hawaiian Islands (part of the United States). It is not only a beautiful area, but offers a variety of accessible things to do. The Kona community is very supportive for anyone with a disability and welcomes visitors of all abilities. There are training centers for people with mobility impairments who would like to participate in disabled Iron Man competitions, at least one accessible community snorkeling group, and accessible horseback riding, just to name a few.

AIR TRANSPORTATION/AIRPORT

Kona International Airport: At the Kona airport there are no jetbridges. All boarding of passengers is done from the tarmac via stairs. People with mobility impairments will be assisted on the plane typically via lift or aisle chair. Passengers with mobility impairments should contact their airline ahead of time to arrange assistance.

For people who have a hearing impairment the Kona International Airport is equipped with Text Telephones (TTYs).

The Kona International Airport has both wheelchair accessible restrooms with accessible stalls and family/companion restrooms. The family restrooms are located in the following areas:

North Terminal, east of security checkpoint

South Terminal, south of security checkpoint

Ground Transportation Building

GROUND TRANSPORTATION

RENTAL VEHICLES

“At the airport the rental car agencies can get you hand controls (free, but order in advance by phone) or Wheelchair Getaways (800-638-1912) rents wheelchair vans (pricey at about a $100 a day plus pick up charges, but worth it is that is what you need). My recommendation for airport transport is Speedi Shuttle (877-242-5777) – friendly service, portable ramp to get any chair into their modern vans with lots of room.” Lew, 9/7/10

SHUTTLE

Speedishuttle, LLC: Speedishuttle is ADA accessible. Accessible shuttles should be made 48 hours in advance. When making a reservation state that you require a shuttle van with a ramp if required. The company has a portable ramp and needs time to install the ramp before pick-up.

Sports: “if you want to be active and exercise, the spirit of support for Ironman helps you there too. On a personal coaching level I can recommend Eric Nielsen (a physical therapist, triathelete and swim-run-bike coach, at http://coachericneilsen.com/ ” Lew, 9/7/10

BUS

“Buses from the airport to downtown and around the city are also wheelchair accessible. Paratransit service is also available. The trick is the transit service between Anchorage and Seaward and the closer port where the glacial cruises leave from. The service that provides ground transportation for the glacial crew services only have one wheelchair accessible Boston must rent from another service and they do not like to run it unless they have a full bus since it costs them more. the owner sits on the panel concerning accessibility accommodations, but our partners at Assistive Technology of Alaska mentioned people knew his own minibuses were not wheelchair accessible.” Mark, 7/19/2010

Note that the Hurricane Turn would not offer any stopping along the way, since there are no stations along the route. However, passengers can still ride roundtrip.

SIGHTSEEING TOURS

Boat Tours: “Also certain boats provided and run by the glacial crew services are far more wheelchair accessible and enjoyable than others. 2 of them are more modern and do not have a large threshold you must step over when going outside the heated cabin area. Otherwise as a wheelchair user you are relegated to one spot and are not able to take in the sites like all of the other clients.” Mark, 7/19/2010

SIGHTSEEING TOURS

Gettysburg Battlefield / National Park is the main attraction in Gettysburg. This large battlefield has been well documented and there is a very thorough auto tour that goes throughout. You can easily spent several hours in your car driving to the various sites that track the three days of the historic battle in 1863.

In addition to the auto tour there is a visitor center located in the National Park.

The downtown area of Gettysburg also offers a variety of walking and other historic tours.

During the July 4th weekend there is an annual reenactment of the historic battle. It is by far the busiest weekend in Gettysburg but does offer a unique historical perspective on the event.

PRECAUTIONS

“Maui is a world class destination with incredible views and gorgeous weather. As with anyplace theft does occur but it usually opportunistic. Lock your car and condo doors and use common sense.” - Bruce, 5/4/2010

“September and October can get a bit toasty so drink a lot and avoid getting over heated.” - Bruce, 5/4/2010

“My name is Bruce Bernhardt and I own the accessible condo mentioned above. I am a C5/6 quad and have owned my condo on Maui since 1991, so I know the accessibility of Maui. It is good with curb cuts and other basic accessibility although you’ll run into older stores which have stairs. Sand and wheelchairs don’t do well together, so access to beach and other natural areas are limited in many areas but that’s just part of our life. More than enough places and activities to keep you busy and entertained so you don’t feel short changed on the Maui experience.” - Bruce, 5/4/2010

“We flew into Pensacola. We were not able to find a wheelchair accessible van there. The closest one we found was in Mobile, Alabama—60 miles away. They charge a fee to deliver and pick up which was $2.00 per mile. (it would have been $240.00 just for delivery.) It was also only available for half of the time we were there. Therefore, we rented a regular mini-van from Alamo. They put the seats down in the back so we could fit the wheelchair in the back. We got a ramp from a company called Phase III. Phase III has wheelchair accessible vans for rent. They did not have one available at the time we were there. If you go to Pensacola, make sure to get the van far in advance if you can.” Barbara, 11/17/09

“Anita and Kenny are a lovely couple. They run the business and will do anything they can to help you. They did not have a wheelchair accessible van available at the time we were there, but they let us borrow a ramp from them to use with the van that we rented from Alamo. They did not even charge us for it! They are so nice. If you can rent from them, you should.” Barbara, 11/17/09

We were leaving on a Saturday and therefore had to return the chair on Friday. When Anita and Kenny heard that, they volunteered to return the chair for us so we could use it one more day. They were so wonderful. We brought the chair along with their ramp on Saturday and they delivered the chair for us on Monday. How great is that?” Barbara, 11/17/09

ARVA was very easy to work with and dependable. Our driver dropped off the van at the Jacksonville International Airport, and met us at the luggage claim. He was on time and very courteous. Accessible Rental Van’s representative showed us how to use the tie downs, GPS, etc. The van was very reliable and clean. When we were ready to drop off the van, the rental van representative met us at a local Starbucks to drive over with us to the airport so that we wouldn’t have to worry about finding him at the airport.

HOTELS

Aloft Hotel (W hotel): The Aloft Hotel is a W hotel. The hotel was very quiet and is modern. Aloft is located across the street from a variety of fast food restaurants, a strip mall, and a drive through Starbucks. Accessibility at the Aloft was very good. The bed was at the correct height for transfer out of a wheelchair, and the desk was a good height to work at. The bathroom was also very accessible and roomy. It was equipped with a roll in shower, grab bars, removable shower nozzle, and a sink which was a good height for wheelchairs to roll underneath. Even though the room was accessible, note that all rooms at the W Hotels are typically smaller hotel rooms.

LUXURY RESORTS

The bathroom was very spacious equipped with grab bars and a roll under sink. Note that there are a variety of accessible rooms at this hotel, however if you require a roll in shower, you must request it. The only challenge was that the bed was quite high for transferring out of a wheelchair into bed.

This resort is conveniently located in a touristy area near a plaza which gives you a variety of options of restaurants and bars to choose from, including a cigar bar. Small shops are also sprinkled between some of the restaurants and bars.

Since One Ocean Resort and Spa is located on the beach, there is beach access for people who utilize a wheelchair or mobility device. There is a long wooden ramp to get you to the beach which ends on a wooden platform. The platform doesn’t go along the beach, just to the beach front.
BUS

IndyGo: All IndyGo buses are ADA accessible. Check with the IndyGo website for further information on services and routes.

” All IndyGo buses kneel and are equipped with power lifts or ramps for anyone who cannot use the stairs to board. Any passenger may request the use of the ramps or kneeling function. The ramps and lifts are designed to accommodate a “common wheelchair” as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The device should measure no more than 30 inches wide by 48 inches deep. The weight of the device when occupied cannot exceed 600 pounds. IndyGo buses may accommodate up to two (2) mobility devices at a time. It is a good idea to measure your mobility device before attempting to board a bus. You may bring a two-wheeled mobility device such as a Segway on the bus. If you have a powered device, IndyGo recommends turning the power off.

To board the bus, please wait in plain view at the bus stop where the operator can see you. If you need the ramp or lift, and the operator has not already deployed it, please ask the operator to do so. If you need help guiding our mobility device onto the ramp or lift, the operator can assist you. Backing your mobility device onto the ramp may make it easier to maneuver once on board. While on the ramp or lift, set your brakes and, if you have a power device, turn off the power. Once you are on board, priority seating is located toward the front of the bus.

Hilbert Circle Theatre: Indianapolis has a highly-rated, full-time Symphony Orchestra, which performs downtown at the recently renovated (and accessible) Hilbert Circle Theatre.

Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens: ”Both the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens are wheelchair accessible. Look for ramps inside the Zoo grounds by the overlook at the Plains yard, on the platform for giraffe feeding, and leading into the Dolphin Adventure Pavilion. At the Gardens, look for the ramp into the Schaefer Rotunda entrance, the ramp from the Rotunda up to the main floor, and the elevator in the alcove adjacent to the Gardens box office.” Charlotte, 8/19/10

“There are accessible doors on buildings throughout the grounds, as well as accessible rest rooms and water fountains.” Charlotte, 8/19/10

Lucas Oil Stadium: (home to the Indianapolis Colts, the 2010 NCAA Final Four, the 2012 Super Bowl, concerts, etc) The Lucas Oil Stadium was brand new in 2008 and is completely accessible.
Monuments: Indianapolis is also home to the second largest number of federal monuments in the nation (after Washington DC), including the circle monument (civil war), the WWII memorial park, the USS Indianapolis memorial, and many others. All of these are outdoor sights that are fairly accessible.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway: (home to the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400, Moto GP, etc) is nearly 100 years old and has limited accessibility (biggest problems are busy concourses and limited accessible restrooms).

Howl at the Moon: “Howl at the Moon has a pretty steep ramp up to it and can get pretty crowded. It also has several tiers inside and would not be to fun to navigate in a wheelchair.” Mark, 2/9/2010

Nicky Blaines: “Nicky Blaines is below street level and I don’t recall an elevator, but that would not matter b/c it is full of large couches and chairs, making it difficult to navigate.” Mark, 2/9/2010

PRECAUTIONS

“Due to the large number of conventions and sporting events in downtown Indianapolis, this part of the city should pose few problems and boasts convenient hotels, restaurants, museums, sights, sporting events, etc. Broad Ripple may pose some parking challenges, but should be fine once you are there. The north side should be no concern once (other than getting there). The Speedway is likely the biggest challenge, but would be well worth it. The airport is brand new, large, and not all that busy, so should be a piece of cake.” Matt, 1/28/2010

HOTELS

Old Town Guesthouse: A beautiful, wheelchair accessible Inn, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

“In July of 2008, my husband and I stayed at a perfect inn in Colorado Springs – The Old Town Guesthouse! This beautifully decorated inn, was a welcome sight after a long day of traveling. We were warmly welcomed by the innkeepers and owners Shirley and Don Wicks, and were treated specialthroughout our eight day stay.

My husband uses a wheelchair, so we needed an inn that was wheelchair accessible, and a room that had a stand alone shower. (Not easy to find.) The Old Town Guesthouse offered these amenities, along with an elevator that took us to our second floor room.

We stayed in the Oriental Poppy room, which looked just like the photos on the inn’s webpage. It was a comfortable place to relax, in between visiting our friends who lived in and around Colorado Springs. A special addition to this 2nd floor room was a little porch where we sat and relaxed, while taking in the majestic sight of Pike’s Peak.

Each morning we would start the day off with a delicious breakfast. The aroma of muffins baking in the oven would welcome us as we sat down to enjoy a three course breakfast, of fruit, muffins and an egg or baked dish. On occasion our friends joined us for breakfast before leaving the inn for the day.

In addition to all the inn offers, it is situated in a good location, off of West Colorado Avenue, in Old Colorado City. It’s walking distance to great restaurants and shops.

This inn is ideal for those who require a place that is accessible. We would definitely stay here again.” Marie, 1/2/2010

ACTIVITIES

Notre Dame: The campus of The University of Notre Dame is largely accessible thanks to renovations that have taken place over the past decade. The beauty of the campus grounds and architecture are worth a visit.

Basilica of the Sacred Heart: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic Church located on the Notre Dame campus and is arguably one of the most beautiful churches in the world. The Basilica is ornately decorated with murals, gold ribbing in the ceilings with rich, blue accents. There are stained glass windows throughout this neo-gothic designed church. Stairs are located at the front of the church, but there is wheelchair accessible access via ramp around the east side of the church. The door is marked with an accessible symbol and has an electric actuator that can be activated by the large blue button.

Grotto of our Lady of Lourdes: The Grotto is a popular place where students and visitors go to light candles and pray. It’s typically tough to find a candle that is not already lit. The Grotto is located on the University campus, and is fully wheelchair accessible.

Hammes: The Hammes Bookstore is located on campus and is a destination in of itself where one can find any relevant Notre Dame paraphernalia.

Theodore Hesburgh Library: The Theodore Hesburgh Library facade is painted with a mural of Jesus. Since the mural of Jesus faces the stadium, students and fans have informally named the painting, “Touchdown Jesus” due to the position of his arms and him facing the stadium.

The Golden Dome Building: The golden dome building located on campus is the administration building and is wheelchair accessible through doors which have the international wheelchair accessible symbol posted. There are also elevators located inside the building. Inside the Golden dome, there is beautiful artwork, murals, and tapestries.

Notre Dame Stadium: Attending football games is no problem for travelers with disabilities. The stadium is complete with ramps and accessible restrooms. Wheelchair seating at the stadium is located on the 2nd level. There are multiple elevators that take passengers to the 2nd level. Note that the elevator can get crowded, and it can take a while to get down after a game. Across the street from the stadium is the JACC, the basketball / hockey facility which provides an alternative football venue complete with large TVs for viewing the game when the weather is poor.

Parking for a football game at Notre Dame can be quite hectic. Multiple signs are posted on campus directing to disabled parking. The remote lot is located north-east of the library for people with disabilities. There is a shuttle service which does frequent round trips between the stadium and the lot, but it’s not too far of a walk if the weather’s nice. The shuttle bus is equipped with a lift for wheelchair access.
