The trick is the transit service between Anchorage and Seaward and the closer port where the glacial cruises leave from. Alaska Railroad: The Alaska Railroad trains are ADA compliant. They offer wheelchair lifts at each station. Passengers are able to remain in their wheelchair for the duration of the ride, if they wish. There are designated areas which allow space for wheelchairs. If special needs are required, please advise the railroad in advance.

 Note that the Hurricane Turn would not offer any stopping along the way, since there are no stations along the route. However, passengers can still ride roundtrip.

 Also Spencer and Grandview would not be available since they are more remote. Passengers can still ride to those areas, but would not be able to disembark.

OVERVIEW

Located in Southeastern Pennsylvania, not too far from D.C. or Baltimore, Gettysburg is a quaint town with great historical Civil War significance.  In 1863 a historic 3 day battle was fought there, costing the lives of over 51,000 soldiers and turning the tide of the war towards the Union Army (North).   Today Gettysburg remains a small town with a large national memorial / battlefield park.  It is a great stop for any history fan.  Accessibility in Gettysburg is relatively good.

SIGHTSEEING TOURS

Gettysburg Battlefield / National Park is the main attraction in Gettysburg.  This large battlefield has been well documented and there is a very thorough auto tour that goes throughout.  You can easily spent several hours in your car driving to the various sites that track the three days of the historic battle in 1863. 

In addition to the auto tour there is a visitor center located in the National Park.

The downtown area of Gettysburg also offers a variety of walking and other historic tours.

During the July 4^th weekend there is an annual reenactment of the historic battle.  It is by far the busiest weekend in Gettysburg but does offer a unique historical perspective on the event.

OVERVIEW

Puerto Vallarta is a popular resort town situated on the western coast of Mexico, south of Baja. Puerto Vallarta has a lot to offer visitors with mobility impairment, but accessibility can be a bit challenging. In the older part of town, there are many streets paved with cobblestones, and there are also a lot of sidewalks that are missing curb cuts. The city is still continuing to work on making Puerto Vallarta a more accessible travel destination for people who utilize mobility devices. Accessible transportation is a must because the town is very spread out. The best time to visit is between November and March.

ACTIVITIES

Aquaventuras Park: Aquaventuras Park is a water park 30 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. A featured activity of the park is “swim with the dolphins,” where visitors can swim in a pool with dolphins and interact (e.g., kissing, touching belly, shaking fin). There are 3 tiers of interaction available at varying prices. Trainers educate participants about the dolphins and how to be more responsible with our environment so we can preserve the oceans. People with disabilities are welcome to participate; however, there is not a wheelchair accessible beach entry. Life jackets are provided and must be worn in the dolphin pool. Only water proof cameras are allowed in the dolphin area.

Beaches: There are some fabulous beaches in Puerto Vallarta. Unfortunately, none are accessible without the use of a beach wheelchair. Beach wheelchairs are available for rent from Mexico Accesible.

The Malecon (Boardwalk): The Boardwalk is a scenic walkway along the downtown seaside and is a popular place for both locals and tourists to visit. The curb on the boardwalk is very high but there are access points for individuals utilizing wheelchairs or scooters. There are numerous sculptures along the boardwalk, and it’s also a great place to people watch. There are also many restaurants and bars lining the road opposite the Malecon, but most have steps at entryways. 

Cathedral of our Lady Guadalupe: The Cathedral is a landmark site in Puerto Vallarta and was built in the early 1920s. The cathedral is ornately decorated on the inside with large columns and elaborate molding. Unfortunately, the Cathedral of our Lady Guadalupe is not wheelchair accessible. There is a small step at the entrance of the cathedral making it difficult for people who use mobility devices. There has been talk about rennovation to make this landmark accessible in the near future.

City Tour: A city tour is a great way to visit Puerto Vallarta and gives visitors a taste of what Puerto Vallarta has to offer. It’s also a great tour if you’re just visiting Puerto Vallarta for a day and want to see the highlights. Mexico Accessible listed above offers city tours.

Galleria Dante (Art Gallery): “The Galleria Dante has ramps into the garden areas. Because of the high sidewalks in Vallarta, for the rainy season, getting to the gallery may be the biggest obstacle. Most street corners have ramps, but not all sidewalks are level.” Claire, 5/10/2010   

Olas Altas (Romantica Zone): Olas Altas, also known as the Romantica Zone, is a popular area in Puerto Vallarta for both visitors and locals. There are several restaurants and shops with either ramps or flush entryways in Olas Altas. Compared to other areas of Puerto Vallarta, Olas Altas is relatively wheelchair accessible.

Finding a wheelchair accessible restaurant can be difficult in Puerto Vallarta due to the overall age of the buildings in the city. There are steps at entrances of the majority of restaurants. However, there are some that are accessible; below we have listed some restaurants, which are accessible to varying degrees. Although some of the restaurants in Puerto Vallarta are wheelchair accessible, most do not have accessible bathrooms. 

El Dorado by Boca Bento: El Dorado restaurant is located on the Los Muertos beachfront in Olas Altas (Romantica Zone). The restaurant’s entrance is wheelchair accessible, and there is also outdoor dining underneath palapas. Note that only portions of the restaurant is wheelchair accessible.

 La Palapa Restaurant and Lounge: The La Palapa Restaurant and Lounge is wheelchair accessible, and is located on Los Muertos Beach in Olas Altas (Romantica Zone). Live Jazz music is featured in the evenings. 

Mi Querencia: Mi Querencia offers traditional Mexican cuisine. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible via ramp and is located on Morelos #426 Col. Centro.

“We rented a wheelchair accessible sightseeing tour in Puerto Vallarta and visited the Aquadventuras Park to swim with the dolphins. Our friends wanted to stay longer with their child while we explored the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta. When we came back to pick them up, a taxi service contracted with Aquaventuras would not allow us to pick up our friends without paying a fee $15 (wanted to charge us $30). He claimed we were taking a taxi fare from his company, although we clearly rented the van service as a group. We feel he took advantage of us because we were tourists.” Christopher, 5/3/2010

Kahului Airport, OGG: The Kahului Airport has two levels. The second level is accessible by elevator. The building is a modern airport with air conditioning, a jet bridge, and an accessible bathroom with wide stalls and grab bars. There is not a companion bathroom available at this airport. Wheelchairs are on hand upon request, however arrangements should be made with your airline ahead of time if you require an aisle chair, or transfer assistance. There are porters available at this airport to also assist with luggage.

For people who have hearing difficulties, TTY’s are available at the Kahului Airport. The text telephones are located at the ticket lobby, next to the gift shop, and in the baggage claim area.

In Mazatlan, a network of taxis is present; unfortunately, they are not wheelchair accessible.  The taxis found in Mazatlan resemble a cross between a golf cart and Volkswagen beetle.  They are convertible, so theoretically it could be possible to transfer into the vehicle and stash a small chair or walker somewhere.  However, it may be extremely difficult to get into the back seat, and again, the vehicles are so small that there may be no room for even a small wheelchair.

ACTIVITIES

Boardwalk: The boardwalk is wheelchair accessible at most parts, and is the longest boardwalk in the world. The curb is high, but there are random curb cuts and ramps throughout.

Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception: The cathedral is wheelchair accessible via ramps. At the front gate there is a steep, narrow ramp, which gives access to the plaza outside the cathedral. To access the cathedral, there is a portable ramp. There is plenty of room inside the cathedral to maneuver around and view the fascinating architecture and relics. The cathedral is the only Catholic Church that has the Star of David embedded in 28 stain glass windows. Make sure to dress respectfully and remove hats when visiting the cathedral.

Cliff Divers: The cliff divers are an amazing spectacle to see. The divers perform by hurling themselves off a 50 foot high natural rock formation into a shallow ocean tide. The divers perform about every 15 minutes, whenever tour buses show up. The show is free, however tips are appreciated.

Devils Cave: The devils cave is located on the mountain side across the street from the Boardwalk (near the lighthouse). Visitors can’t walk up to the cave or explore the interior, as it is sealed by gate. Historically, the cave was used for storing dynamite, which emitted a sulfur smell. Thus, the cave was named Devil’s Cave, due to the odor.

Golden Zone (Zona Dorada): The Golden Zone is the newer zone in town (in terms of building construction) and is known for shopping and restaurants.  It is also where the majority of hotels are located.

Flower Market: The flower market is an interesting place, filled with vibrant flowers lining the sidewalks. It’s a relatively small area. Not all of the area is wheelchair accessible, but the flowers can be seen from the sidewalk/street.

Mazatlan’s Lighthouse: The lighthouse is not wheelchair accessible, however, it can be seen from many parts of Mazatlan. The lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the world (it rests at the top of a large mountain).  Individuals can hike up the mountain trail that leads to the lighthouse, but it is not wheelchair accessible.

Historic Mazatlan: Historic Mazatlan is a wonderful area to tour. The architecture in the Historic Mazatlan district is vibrant. The city has been in the process of restoring Old Mazatlan. In fact, when a business owner buys or opens a new restaurant or store, they must restore the building to its original character. Accessibility can be tough in the area due to its historic nature, but accessible establishments can be found.

Plaza Machando: In this area there are many sidewalk cafes and musical events taking place. It’s a very charming area to spend the afternoon or evening. Again, accessibility can be challenging, but there are many outdoor cafes to choose from.

Shopping: There are some great shopping areas in Mazatlan. Travelers can find just the experience they are looking for, from mall to local shops to flea market.

Shrimp Market: Mazatlan is a major supplier of shrimp for consumers around the world. The shrimp market is a fun tour stop as one can see all the varieties of shrimp for sale. The streets are lined with buckets of shrimp ready to be bought up by local restaurants and people.

Chili’s Pepper: Chili’s Pepper is a beachfront restaurant in the Golden Zone, and is wheelchair accessible in the dining area, but it can be tricky finding the ramp because the restaurant is located in the back of a plaza.  Note that bathrooms and beach are not accessible. Outdoor dining in the open breeze creates a wonderful setting for sampling the local seafood and cerveza.

Accessibility in Mazatlan can be difficult due to the fact that it’s an older city and ADA laws do not apply like in the United States. Curb cuts are in random places, ramps are steep, and wheelchair accessible bathrooms are difficult to find as well. Cruise personnel will determine if the seas are calm enough for a power wheelchair to transfer to the tender for the safety of guests. Only 1 wheelchair at a time can utilize the accessible tender.

Shopping: There are plenty of places to shop in Cabo, whether it is in the cruise port area or downtown Cabo San Lucas. Most of the shopping in the cruise port is wheelchair accessible. In the non-touristy area, downtown shopping can be a bit more challenging as there is usually a step or lip to get into most shops. Local people are always very helpful to assist though.

Glass Bottom Boats: Glass bottom boats in Cabo San Lucas are currently not wheelchair accessible.

Fishing: There is a wheelchair accessible fishing boat through Baja Enterprises, specifically modified for people who utilize a wheelchair that will head into Cabo San Lucas. The boat is located in Los Barriles and is owned by Baja Larry, who also utilizes a wheelchair.

Accessible whale watching: Accessible whale watching and fishing can be arranged through a nearby company called, Baja Enterprises. Reservations should be made well in advance as they book up fast. This tour is not recommended for people who are visiting off a cruise ship, since time in Cabo San Lucas is limited.

Museo Cabo San Lucas (museum): The museum is located in the town center and is wheelchair accessible via ramp located to the left side of the building. The ramp is marked with the international accessibility logo.

Town Square: Town Square is where many of the locas go to watch festivities or picnic with their families. The Town Square is wheelchair accessible, but the ramp can be difficult to find. The Gazebo is not wheelchair accessible.

Restaurants and nightlife are a fun part of the Cabo San Lucas scene. There are many to choose from, but from an accessibility standpoint they are limited. Restrooms at most establishments are not wheelchair accessible. Some claim to be accessible, but the stalls are too small to accommodate larger chairs.

 Cabo Wabo Cantina: Cabo Wabo’s outside patio/bar is wheelchair accessible, however the tables are high and can be difficult to reach if your wheelchair does not elevate. There is a small step to get into the actual Cabo Wabo nightclub. The nightclub has regular tables that are at the correct height for a wheelchair. There are two levels inside the nightclub, and the top level has a flight of stairs.

 No Worry’s: The restaurant is located on the waterfront and is a relaxing place to enjoy some drinks and a bite to eat with friends. No Worry’s is wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp around the side to access the main restaurant area.  Restrooms are not wheelchair accessible – the stalls are too small.

“We flew into Pensacola.  We were not able to find a wheelchair accessible van there.  The closest one we found was in Mobile, Alabama—60 miles away.  They charge a fee to deliver and pick up which was $2.00 per mile.  (it would have been $240.00 just for delivery.)  It was also only available for half of the time we were there.  Therefore, we rented a regular mini-van from Alamo.  They put the seats down in the back so we could fit the wheelchair in the back.  We got a ramp from a company called Phase III.  Phase III has wheelchair accessible vans for rent.  They did not have one available at the time we were there.  If you go to Pensacola, make sure to get the van far in advance if you can.”  Barbara, 11/17/09

“We were also not able to find a power wheelchair.  In desperation, I sent an email to the City Council of Pensacola who forwarded it to a company called Center for Independent Living.  They are a company that loans equipment to people with disabilities.  They let us borrow a power wheelchair for the week we were there.  The entire process to get the chair took two days!  They do not deliver and are only opened Monday – Friday.  They were wonderful!  We picked the power wheelchair up on a Monday.  They adjusted it so that it fit my daughter perfectly.  I do not remember the brand.  They have several types.  The only requirement was that we fill out some paperwork in advance and fax my daughter and my husband’s ID.  The chair was completely free!  We also had to give them assurance that we had transportation for the chair. We were leaving on a Saturday and therefore had to return the chair on Friday.  When Anita and Kenny heard that, they volunteered to return the chair for us so we could use it one more day.  They were so wonderful.  We brought the chair along with their ramp on Saturday and they delivered the chair for us on Monday.  How great is that?” Barbara, 11/17/09

Accessible Rental Vans of America: Accessible Rental Vans of America was previously Rainbow Wheels. ARVA was very easy to work with and dependable. Our driver dropped off the van at the Jacksonville International Airport, and met us at the luggage claim. He was on time and very courteous. Accessible Rental Van’s representative showed us how to use the tie downs, GPS, etc. The van was very reliable and clean. When we were ready to drop off the van, the rental van representative met us at a local Starbucks to drive over with us to the airport so that we wouldn’t have to worry about finding him at the airport.

HOTELS

Aloft Hotel (W hotel):  The Aloft Hotel is a W hotel. The hotel was very quiet and is modern. Aloft is located across the street from a variety of fast food restaurants, a strip mall, and a drive through Starbucks. Accessibility at the Aloft was very good. The bed was at the correct height for transfer out of a wheelchair, and the desk was a good height to work at. The bathroom was also very accessible and roomy. It was equipped with a roll in shower, grab bars, removable shower nozzle, and a sink which was a good height for wheelchairs to roll underneath. Even though the room was accessible, note that all rooms at the W Hotels are typically smaller hotel rooms.

LUXURY RESORTS

One Ocean Resort and Spa: The One Ocean Resort and Spa is located on the beach, in Atlantic Beach, about a 30 minute drive from Jacksonville Airport. The hotel is an upscale resort and has an elevator located near the grand staircase. The room was wheelchair accessible and had the international symbol for disability located outside the door above the room number. The bathroom was very spacious equipped with grab bars and a roll under sink. Note that there are a variety of accessible rooms at this hotel, however if you require a roll in shower, you must request it. The only challenge was that the bed was quite high for transferring out of a wheelchair into bed.

This resort is conveniently located in a touristy area near a plaza which gives you a variety of options of restaurants and bars to choose from, including a cigar bar. Small shops are also sprinkled between some of the restaurants and bars.

Since One Ocean Resort and Spa is located on the beach, there is beach access for people who utilize a wheelchair or mobility device. There is a long wooden ramp to get you to the beach which ends on a wooden platform. The platform doesn’t go along the beach, just to the beach front. It’s a great viewing point to relax by the ocean or soak up some Florida rays.

Guests at the One Ocean Resort and Spa have access to a nearby golf course, called Queen’s Harbor Yacht and Country Club, which is only open to members, and guests of the resort.

Anchors Aweigh Charters: Anchors Aweigh Charters is a wheelchair Accessible fishing boat that has been modified with a variety of accessible features to accommodate people with disabilities. The boat is located on Amelia Island, and is free to those who have a physical or developmental disability. There is an application process for people with disabilities to qualify. Beaches: The Jacksonville Beach coast is lined with fabulous beaches, and there are three areas which provide wheelchair accessible access.

-          5th Avenue North (has accessible restroom)

-           Beach Blvd. and 1st Street– Access from boardwalk

-          6th Avenue South (has accessible restroom)

Golf: Jacksonville offers golf in a variety of locations throughout the city. If you’re a guest at the One Ocean Resort and Spa, you can enjoy the privilege of playing 18 holes at the Queen’s Harbor Yacht and Country Club, which is a semi-privately owned club.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens: The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is wheelchair accessible. The park offers wheelchair, both motorized and manual wheelchairs, which can be rented for the day. The wheelchairs for rent are located across from the train near the gate.

Museum of Science and Industry: The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is located about 20 miles away from the airport. It’s a place for the whole family to enjoy, especially the kids. There are many interactive exhibits throughout the museum and many other things to enjoy, including an Imax theater. The MOSI is wheelchair accessible.

Okefenokee Adventures: Okefenokee Adventures is located at a National Wildlife Refuge in a wetland ecosystem. Here you can explore and learn about a variety of creatures that live in the swamp ecosystem. The park is actually located in Folkston, Georgia, about an hour 1/2 drive from the Jacksonville International Airport. The park is fully wheelchair accessible, and wheelchair accessible guided boat tours are offered.  To book a wheelchair accessible tour, it’s advised to contact the park at least a day in advance so they can coordinate the accessible boat and captain.

“Our boat tour was wheelchair accessible! To board the boat the facility has an accessible wood ramp and dock. The boat was actually a pontoon boat that we boarded via aluminum ramp. On the tour, we saw several large alligators, heron, a red belly turtle and a variety of other living creatures in the swamp. Our Captain was very knowledgeable about the ecosystem and history in the surrounding area. The park also provides wheelchair accessible restrooms and there is an accessible gift shop and restaurant located on the property. After the park visit, we ate at a local BBQ place in town, called Jalen’s, which was wheelchair accessible.” Darren, 3/8/2010

Indianapolis International Airport: The Indianapolis International Airport, which is a newer airport follows ADA guidelines and has provided many elevators, escalators, and motorized walkways to assist visitors. Braille is also placed in elevators and near emergency exits. Wheelchair assistance can be provided, and loaner wheelchairs can be provided upon request. It’s best to contact your airline a few days before departure to coordinate with personnel your specific needs.

All boarding at the Indianapolis International Airport is done by jetbridge.  However, many of the flights are on commuter jets, which are often boarded from the tarmac at other airports (at origination or destination).

IndyGo: All IndyGo buses are ADA accessible. Check with the IndyGo website for further information on services and routes.

” All IndyGo buses kneel and are equipped with power lifts or ramps for anyone who cannot use the stairs to board. Any passenger may request the use of the ramps or kneeling function. The ramps and lifts are designed to accommodate a “common wheelchair” as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The device should measure no more than 30 inches wide by 48 inches deep. The weight of the device when occupied cannot exceed 600 pounds.  IndyGo buses may accommodate up to two (2) mobility devices at a time. It is a good idea to measure your mobility device before attempting to board a bus. You may bring a two-wheeled mobility device such as a Segway on the bus. If you have a powered device, IndyGo recommends turning the power off. 

To board the bus, please wait in plain view at the bus stop where the operator can see you. If you need the ramp or lift, and the operator has not already deployed it, please ask the operator to do so. If you need help guiding our mobility device onto the ramp or lift, the operator can assist you. Backing your mobility device onto the ramp may make it easier to maneuver once on board. While on the ramp or lift, set your brakes and, if you have a power device, turn off the power.  Once you are on board, priority seating is located toward the front of the bus.

Museums: There are many great museums in Indianapolis, including the Indianapolis Childrens’ Museum (one of the nation’s best), the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Indiana State Museum (history), the Eiteljorg Musem (Native American history), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway museum, and the NCAA Hall of Champions.

Hilbert Circle Theatre: Indianapolis has a highly-rated, full-time Symphony Orchestra, which performs downtown at the recently renovated (and accessible) Hilbert Circle Theatre. 

Murat Theatre: The Murat Theatre in downtown Indianapolis offers wheelchair accessible seating on the main floor.

“Due to the large number of conventions and sporting events in downtown Indianapolis, this part of the city should pose few problems and boasts convenient hotels, restaurants, museums, sights, sporting events, etc.  Broad Ripple may pose some parking challenges, but should be fine once you are there.  The north side should be no concern once (other than getting there).  The Speedway is likely the biggest challenge, but would be well worth it.  The airport is brand new, large, and not all that busy, so should be a piece of cake.” Matt, 1/28/2010
