When traveling to places where accessibility can be questionable, purchase and carry a light weight, foldable “suitcase ramp”. Great for those places that have a couple of annoying steps. The ramp fits nicely in a large skateboard backpack, or hiking backpack, and can be carried by a companion traveler. The ramp is also easy to check at the airport.

A frequent port for cruise ships, George Town does not have a dock large enough to accommodate cruise ships, and must be accessed by tender or airplane.

George Town does not have a dock capable of serving cruise ships. All visiting ships must moor and utilize tenders to transport guests to and from the island. Consult with your concierge if you must take your electric wheelchair or scooter to the island. When we visited, I chose to use my manual chair to access the island.

George Town is home to some great duty-free shopping, where deals can be found on everything from jewelry to alcohol. The shopping district is located directly adjacent to the dock where the tenders offload. We found the town to be very wheelchair accessible.

Because cruise ship access to George Town is limited to the tender, be aware that the seas can be considerably rougher for these small boats. If you are prone to sea sickness or worried that your chair might be damaged, check the conditions before embarking.
